Memorials
Background and Approach
Over many years and across the University, colleagues have sought to mark the life and contribution of members of staff or students with some form of memorial. Previous arrangements were largely informal and often ad hoc, but there was always a desire to accommodate such requests, whether it be for tree planting, benches, artefacts or dedications.
In response to a need for a more structured approach which provides greater transparency, enables timely response and fulfilment of requests, and ensures installations are appropriate and sympathetic to the wider environment, responsibility for the management and fulfilment of all requests now rests with the Estates Directorate Property Development & Investment Team in liaison with the Development & Alumni Office as required. Oversight will be provided by the Space Management Delivery Board who will receive regular reports on requests and installations.
Locations and options for memorials at both Gilmorehill and Garscube have been identified (see Appendix A). Costs will be advised for the specific form requested once a memorial has been agreed. Agreement to install a memorial will only be considered where it is in the name of a member of staff (current or retired), a matriculated student or an alumnus of the University where the individual has played an active role since their graduation (by discretion).
Procedure
Requests should be submitted to propertyassets@glasgow.ac.uk.
All requests other than those associated with donations and sponsorship will be assigned to a project manager to fulfil once the relevant information and arrangements have been confirmed.
Requests relating to donations or sponsorships will be handled by the Development & Alumni (D&A) team who will liaise with the requestor.
Where an inscription is to be included, the final text will require to be signed-off by the requestor.
Payments will be processed either via budget code recharges or a direct invoice.
A record of all memorials, benefactors and locations will be maintained for future reference and to aid overall management.
