Title: Combining Digital and Non-Digital Approaches for Discussing Place

Speaker: Dr. Alexander Wilson (University of Newcastle)

Abstract: Enhancing the role of citizens in shaping places has been a longstanding objective for governments, communities and the academy. Although a range of techniques has been developed by the state to give people an opportunity to get involved, these methods often struggle to create a meaningful way to communicate these aspirations. In this presentation, I will explore the design, deployments and evaluation of a new technological device that explored a new digital method for participants to share place views and aspirations beyond more traditional communication methods, and how the device has been co-opted in research projects to facilitate often challenging conversations. The device, called JigsAudio, is an open-source device fabricated by the author that encourages people to express themselves creatively through drawing and talking.

Speaker Biography: Alexander Wilson is a lecturer in the School of Architecture, Planning & Landscape at the University of Newcastle. Alexander has degrees in both town planning and computing, and recently finished their PhD (within EPSRC the Centre for Doctoral Training in Digital Civics) that explored how technology can create the means for an open dialogue around place, and how through these technologies, more meaningful discussions can happen about the future of cities.

What is the Innovative Research Methodologies for a Digital Society (IRMDS) (2022-2023) Workshop Series?

Algorithms, digital data sets, social media networks, integrated technologies are all part of our everyday lives. How should we investigate the ongoing changes and challenges of our digital society? How should we explore our relationships with digital data and the online world? What are the limitations and affordances of new methodologies and what ethical considerations should researchers take into account as they look at the digitalisation of our lives? The Digital Society and Economy Interdisciplinary Theme Group invites you to join us for a new workshop series where you can meet researchers who will share Innovative Research Methodologies that address current digital practices and phenomena.

The workshops are open to postgraduate researchers, Early Career Researchers, as well as experienced researchers who want to learn about new methodologies or share their own experiences with the methods presented in the workshop. Each workshop will focus on a new method/methodology tried and tested in various contexts. The workshops are meant to provide participants with the opportunity to learn about that method/methodology and ask questions about the process of implementing it. Each workshop will last 50 minutes: 20-30 min for speaker's presentation and 20-30 min for Q&A.
