James Watt School of Engineering Hosts Student Event
The James Watt School of Engineering held an in-person student recruitment event on 4th February, the first since COVID restrictions came into place. The School welcomed almost 200 prospective students and their parents, who travelled through the rain, hail, wind, snow (and thankfully) some sunshine to get here! Applicants got the chance to watch demos from researchers, hear presentations from academics, meet the Engineering societies, tour the campus and generally get a feel for life at UoG. The event was a huge success and the team look forward to future recruitment events on campus. These events are important for giving prospective students the opportunity to make the best decision for their future studies.
Remote Workshop Connects Researchers with Schools in Pakistan
Dr Qammer H. Abassi, James Watt School of Engineering, is leading a Global Challenges Research Fund project focussed on developing a remote healthcare system for diabetes management. The project includes collaborators within James Watt School of Engineering, the Institute of Cardiovascular & Medical Sciences and Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS).
To disseminate some of the results of the project the team worked with Dr Gabriella Rodolico and Miss Aiasha Khan (School of Education) to design a remote workshop targeted to schools in Pakistan. The aim of the workshop was to raise awareness of the impact that diabetes has on individuals and wider society. The target audience were schools in Pakistan where pupils were engaged with an active learning pedagogy-based lesson facilitated on site by LUMS engineer team. The workshop was delivered in both Urdu and English, with Miss Khan’s fluency in both languages instrumental to the success of the workshop.
The project was presented to a visiting delegation which included Mr Malik Amin Aslam, Federal Minister and Adviser to Prime Minister of Pakistan for Climate Change, as well as other delegates from Pakistan and Scotland. The Diabetes project was highlighted explicitly by the Minister later interviews for Pakistan Media where he gave his support to scale up this exciting project in Pakistan.
Scottish Apprenticeship Awards 2022 Nominations
The Software Engineering Graduate Apprenticeship (GA) programme in the School of Computing Science had multiple recognition in the Scottish Apprenticeship Awards curated by Skills Development Scotland.
Programme Director, Dr Matthew Barr was shortlisted as a Finalist in the Apprentice Instructor of the Year, alongside Forster Group and Coca Cola Europacific Partners, making Matt the only learning provider representative to make it onto the shortlist.
Two of the UofG employer partners, who have supported our GA programme from the outset, have also made it onto the shortlist. Student Loans Company is a finalist in the Large Employer of the Year Promoting Diversity category, and Barclays have a nominated finalist under Apprentice of the Year.
Despite not taking the final prize, Matt has been invited to take part in a photoshoot and be interviewed for a case study which will generate great publicity for the UofG GA Programme. These nominations pay tribute to the hard work and dedication of the GA Team and their employer partners.
