Professor David Cumming, the University of Glasgow’s Chair of Electronic Systems, has been made a fellow of the world’s largest professional association for the advancement of technology.

Effective from 1 January next year, Professor Cumming will hold the grade of Fellow with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the highest grade of membership. Fellows are selected in recognition of extraordinary accomplishments in their field of research.

Professor Cumming joined the University in January 1999 and works on research projects related to sensor design, ultrasonics, terahertz technology and nanofabrication. His work has resulted in numerous commercial partnerships, including the development of systems to increase the speed at which DNA can be analysed.

Professor Cumming said: “Achieving the grade of IEEE Fellow is a tremendous honour and I’m very proud to have been recognised by the IEEE Board of Directors.”

IEEE brings together experts on cutting-edge projects in fields of research including computing, aerospace, robotics and healthcare to work together for a future where technology can benefit people around the world.

Professor Cumming was one of 297 members of the IEEE to have been made a Fellow. The total number selected in any one year represents no more than one-tenth of a percent of the total voting membership.
