Coming Together: Our Disability Initiative

The EDI committee is pleased to share a promising development within the College – our disability initiative moving ahead! Given the nod by the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Committee, this effort aims to reshape perceptions, challenge stereotypes and foster a more cohesive community.

Aligned with the UK Disability History Month (16 November - 16 December) and the International Day of Disabled Persons on 3rd December 2023, this initiative is spearheaded by our "Disability Awareness Task Force." Comprising members from across CoSE, the task force has come together to discuss and plan activities that aim to spotlight disabilities in a practical and impactful manner.

The strength of this initiative lies in its practical approach with varied focuses. From Exploring Inclusive Language to Nature Walks for Stress Relief, it aims to engage through meaningful experiences. For instance, the "Exploring Inclusive Language" session invites participation in discussions over hot chocolate. This is an opportunity to delve into the significance of language in fostering inclusivity for individuals with disabilities. We'll explore person-centred wording, and how minor changes can create a more inclusive environment.

Another initiative on our radar is the "Lived Experience Session." In the session we will share real-life stories from individuals with disabilities, encouraging learning, empathy and building bridges. By listening and understanding we hope to foster a more supportive atmosphere on campus.

Here's the exciting part – we're reaching out to those interested in contributing to this initiative. Whether you want to share your experiences, participate or help organise sessions, your involvement is welcome. For more details, contact Lydia Bach (Lydia.bach@gla.ac.uk)
