On July 31st Dr Peter Sneddon will step down as Chief Adviser of Studies for Science within the College of Science and Engineering, a role he has held for 10 of the last 11 years. Over that time the Advising system has gone from strength to strength with the team growing from 100 Advisers looking after ~3000 students through to a peak of 180 Advisers looking after 6000+ students, an increase caused in part by the integration of PGT Advising into our pre-existing UG system. Those Advisers have provided invaluable – and indeed highly valued! – support for our students, and one of the aspects of his time in office that Peter is most proud of is the expansion of the support that the College has been able to provide to those Advisers and in turn their students. This has included expanding the direct support the College Administration team provides, helping to shepherd in the highly successful Student Support Officer scheme, or establishing a series of regular training sessions for Advisers. The role has been a very rewarding one, but the time has come for a fresh perspective, and Peter couldn’t be happier to hand over the reins to Dr Colette Mair, who has acted as Deputy Chief Adviser since March 2022.
Colette is a Lecturer in the School of Mathematics and Statistics and acting Deputy Chief Adviser. I am delighted to be stepping into the role of Chief Adviser for Science in August, following on from Peter, who has done an amazing job strengthening and transforming our advising system over the past decade. Looking ahead, I look forward to working with Advisers, Senior Advisers, Student Support Officers and the College Team. I only hope that I can bring a fresh perspective to this role and collaborate with all of you to keep our advising system resilient and adaptable to our students’ needs.
We are immensely grateful to Peter, Colette, and all the staff who take on these larger College roles to benefit our students. Their dedication ensures that those in our College receive the best support possible and that our academic community thrives.
