An overview of staff awards and achievements during Summer 2024.
Vice-Principal and Head of College of Science and Engineering
- Professor Dame Muffy Calder was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Science at St. Andrew's University on Wednesday 12th June 2024. She was delighted to be honoured by the university where she completed her PhD and stressed that passion eases the burdens of work: "...for all of you, wherever you work and whatever you do, I hope you find a great community as I have done...I hope that you all love what you do."
School of Engineering
- Dr Sean McGinty, Reader in Biomedical Engineering, is one of two awardees of the Professor Tom Gibson Memorial Award 2024. This award was established to recognise the outstanding contribution of a young medic or scientist. It was established by the Universities of Strathclyde and Glasgow, with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and the British Association of Plastic Surgeons, to commemorate Professor Tom Gibson.
School of Geographical and Earth Sciences
- Dr Karen Cameron and Dr Sebastian Mutz were awarded funding from NERC to study the potential impact of 21st century warming on glacial ecology. This research will be performed in collaboration with colleagues from Aberystwyth University, and with two of the Arctic Council’s Working Groups (AMAP and CAFF).
- Professor Hester Parr was awarded an ESRC IAA which runs from Sept 2024 to May/June 2025. It Involves a programme with East Dunbartonshire Libraries which will host 4 exhibitions from the Living with SAD research and a library loan system with the project resources and SAD lamps.
School of Mathematics and Statistics
- The RSE Lord Kelvin Medal is awarded to Professor E Marian Scott, for her ground-breaking statistical research which has transformed the application of statistical methods across different disciplines, including environmental science, radiocarbon dating, veterinary science and quantitative archaeology. Her research work has made significant influence on policy and practice, as demonstrated in her public service appointments to the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution, EU Scientific Committee on Health, Environment and Emerging Risk, and the NERC Science Committee.
