An overview of staff awards and achievements during Winter 2023.
Schoool of Chemistry
- Professor Lee Cronin, Regius Chair of Chemistry, is co-author of a paper proposing a new theoretical framework that bridges physics and biology to provide a unified approach for understanding how complexity and evolution emerge in nature. This new work on ‘Assembly Theory’, published in Nature, represents a major advance in our fundamental comprehension of biological evolution and how it is governed by the physical laws of the universe.
- Professor Mark Symes, Professor of Electrochemistry and Electrochemical Technology, has been announced as one of the founding Programme Directors of the Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA). ARIA is a non-departmental public body, sponsored by the UK Government’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. ARIA aims to unlock scientific and technological breakthroughs to benefit everyone in the UK. Read more in this University news article.
- Andrew Jamieson, Professor of Chemical Biology, has been elected to the Royal Society of Chemistry Organic Chemistry Community Council. As a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and now a member of the Council, Professor Jamieson will play a vital role in fostering collaborations between organic chemistry and the wider scientific research community.
School of Computing Science
- Dr Julie Williamson, Senior Lecturer (Computing Science), has received a €2m (£1.75m) grant from the European Research Council to support her project, called ‘Future Social Interaction in XR’, or FUSION. The project’s aim is to close the gap between virtual and physical spaces to create immersive new forms of social interaction online.
- Researchers from the Glasgow Intelligent Computing Laboratory (gicLAB), led by Dr José Cano Reyes, Senior Lecturer, are part of a new cross-Europe network of excellence. Named dAIEDGE (for ‘A network of excellence for distributed, trustworthy, efficient and scalable AI at the Edge’), the network aims to apply artificial intelligence on edge computing platforms. dAIEDGE is supported by €14.4m (£12.3m) in new funding.
- A team of students from the School of Computing Science took second place in the Alexa Prize TaskBot Challenge 2 winning $100,000 for their work in building GRILLBot, an AI-powered multimodal conversational assistant. The team include Sophie Fischer, Niklas Tecklenburg, Philip Zubel, Ekaterina Terzieva, Daniel Armstrong, Eva Kupcova, Carlos Gemmell, Federico Rossetto and Iain Mackie.
James Watt School of Engineering
- Dr Yihuai Zhang, Lecturer in Geo-Energy Engineering (Systems Power & Energy), has received new funding, from the UK Carbon Capture and Storage Research Community Network (UKCCSRC), for a cutting-edge carbon capture and storage (CCS) research project. CCS is essential for achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions and avoiding dangerous climate change.
- Professor Hadi Heidari, Professor of Nanoelectronics (Electronic & Nanoscale Engineering), has been awarded £1.8m from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to develop new wearable technology capable of measuring the progress of neuromuscular diseases. The aim is to provide less invasive, less painful, and more accurate feedback on electrical activity inside the muscles of patients.
- Professor David Cumming, Chair of Electronic Systems (Electronic & Nanoscale Engineering), has been awarded the Institution of Engineering and Technology's Achievement Medal in Electronics. Each year, the IET presents Achievement Medals to those who have made an impact across the engineering and technology sectors. Professor Cumming’s award recognises his ground-breaking work on semiconductor sensors and microsystems integration, which has been published in more than 300 papers.
- Professor Sandy Cochran, Professor of Ultrasound Materials and Devices (Systems Power & Energy), will lead the University of Glasgow’s contribution to the Accelerating Impact of Community healthCarE in Tayside (AICCET) project (led jointly by the University of Dundee and Heriot-Watt University in collaboration with NHS Tayside) which recently received £2.5m in funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council’s Place-based Impact Acceleration Account.
- Dr Morteza Amjadi, Senior Lecturer Biomedical Engineering (Biomedical Engineering), is principal investigator for a new research project which aims to develop low-cost, wearable sensors to prevent deaths from drug overdoses. The ASSESSOR project is one of 11 which is sharing in £5m new Scottish Government funding from the Reducing Drug Deaths Innovation Challenge.
School of Geographical and Earth Sciences
- Dr Luke Daly, Reader, has received the Mineralogical Society’s prestigious Max Hey Medal. The medal is presented to young researchers in recognition of excellent work in the fields of mineralogy, crystallography, petrology and geochemistry. Dr Daly’s work uses cutting-edge scanning and analysis techniques like atom probe tomography to unravel the ancient history sealed in geological samples of asteroids and meteorites. His work has helped provide new insights on the origins of the Earth’s water and the past habitability of Mars.
- PhD student Freya Muir attended the CENSIS Tech Summit on imaging, sensing and the Internet of Things at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. She presented a research poster titled “New Quest! Protect Our Beaches From Climate Change!” and was awarded the prize of Highly Commended by the judging panel.
School of Mathematics and Statistics
- Dr Andrew Wilson, Senior Lecturer (Mathematics), was awarded the Royal Society of Edinburgh’s Innovator’s Public Engagement Medal. The medal recognises exceptional individuals for bringing science to new audiences in a fun and engaging way. Dr Wilson founded the interdisciplinary maths inside photo competition that aims to spark the mathematical curiosity of the nation and raise awareness of the often-unseen mathematics around us.
- Professor Marian Scott, Professor of Environmental Statistics (Statistics), has been appointed to the Natural Environment Research Council’s (NERC) Science Committee. The Committee is NERC's main source of advice on scientific matters and supports the development of NERC's strategic priorities and policies.
- Craig Anderson, senior Lecturer (Statistics), has been appointed the RSS William Guy Lecturer for secondary schools for 2023/24. Craig will deliver a talk on using statistics to monitor air pollution and will be available for live online sessions and in-person visits with local schools.
School of Physics and Astronomy
- Professor Andy Harvey, Chair in Experimental Physics, is principal investigator for a new consortium led by the Universities of Glasgow and Strathclyde. The consortium recently received part of £41m ESPRC funding aimed at boosting the photonics sector. The photonics consortium brings together researchers from the Universities of Glasgow, Strathclyde, Heriot-Watt and St Andrews, who will work with local authorities and industry bodies to advance the growth of the photonics sector.
- Professor Alan Miller, Honorary Research Fellow and former CEO of the Scottish Universities Physics Alliance (SUPA), has been named as an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Physics (IOP). Professor Alan Miller was selected for the award in recognition of his outstanding research and support for early career researchers through his leadership of successful new initiatives. He was nominated for the honour by Professor Sir James Hough, Research Professor in Natural Philosophy, who is also an IOP Honorary Fellow.
Scottish Universities Environmental Reasearch Centre
- Professor Douglas Morrison, Professor of Isotope Bioscience and SUERC Director of Research, is among 62 researchers across the UK who will lead new projects funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).
