Privacy Notice for online students accessing content on the FutureLearn platform

Your Personal Data

The University of Glasgow will be what’s known as the ‘Data Controller’ of your personal data. When you enrol on a University of Glasgow microcredential on the FutureLearn website, your personal data shall be processed by FutureLearn Limited on behalf of the University of Glasgow. The purpose of processing is to monitor, record and deliver your content and progress on the selected microcredential. This privacy notice will explain how The University of Glasgow will process your personal data.

Why we need it

We are collecting your basic personal data such as name, email address/contact details and, where relevant, limited special categories data (such as disability, ethnicity, other health data) as part of Glasgow University’s enrolment journey in order monitor and deliver your course. This special category data will not be passed on to FutureLearn.  We will only collect data that we need in order to provide and oversee this service to you and for progression of study on this course, i.e. options of next course selection.

Legal basis for processing your data

We must have a legal basis for processing all personal data. In this instance, the legal basis is

What we do with it and who we share it with

  • All the personal data you submit to the Univeirsty of Galsgow is processed by staff at the University of Glasgow in the United Kingdom. This data (with the exception of any special category data you may choose to disclose) will then be shared with FutureLearn to allow you access to programme content. FutureLearn’s privacy policy can be located here (https://about.futurelearn.com/terms/privacy-policy) .

FutureLearn also use a number of auxiliary services e.g. Stripe for processing payments, many of which are based in the US. For these US-based services, FutureLearn have contractual agreements in place that ensure that your data is protected and handled in compliance with materially the same standards as would apply within the EEA. 

How long do we keep it for

Data will be held and deleted by the University of Glasgow until 6 years after the termination of studies in accordance with the University of Glasgow requirements.

FutureLearn will remove student access to enrolled courses in accordance with University of Glasgow’s instructions. If a student completes or leaves a programme of study, the University will report this to FutureLearn by providing them with the relevant Student ID, and details of the degree/programme that the student wishes to leave. FutureLearn will then deactivate that student’s enrolment on that course. Deactivation will take place within two-weeks of notification being received. This does not deactive your personal FutureLearn account.

What are your rights?*

You can request access to the information we process about you at any time. If at any point you believe that the information, we process relating to you is incorrect, you can request to see this information and have it rectified. You also have the right to data portability.

*Please note that the ability to exercise these rights will vary and depend on the legal basis on which the processing is being carried out. 

Complaints

If you wish to raise a complaint on how we have handled your personal data, you can contact the University Data Protection Officer who will investigate the matter.
