This course will enable and support students to create short, original pieces of contemporary performance. It will be driven by workshops that develop students' practical skills and conceptual thinking in the broad field of theatre-making that would include directing, devising, live art and writing for performance. The course will culminate in groups of students presenting short productions under professional conditions in our theatre making spaces.

Critical Analysis (2,500 words) - 30%

Individual contribution to dramaturgical development - 20%

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non-Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below. 

This course aims to:

■ provide students with the opportunity to create and produce a piece of theatre with professional-level technical support

■ provide students with the opportunity and support to build on existing creative skills and develop new skills in the field of contemporary theatre-making

■ provide students with the opportunity to further their critical and contextual understanding of trends and practices in contemporary theatre-making

■ encourage and enable students to take independent responsibility for project development, management and production

■ enable students to develop skills in offering constructive dramaturgical feedback

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ apply skills in some element or elements of contemporary theatre-making production

■ critically evaluate evidence of a critical capacity to understand and employ methods and dramaturgical processes drawn from, or inspired by, the field of professional contemporary performance

■ critically evaluate evidence of having developed working methods and practices that allow the independent planning and execution of their project

■ critically analyse and evaluate in writing their own approach to theatre-making and relate their own processes to existing theory and practice in the scholarly and professional fields of contemporary theatre

■ critically analyse, constructively evaluate and verbally contribute to the theatre-making processes and dramaturgies of their own work and that of others

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
