Short Description
Complimenting other survey and thematic courses at Honours level in Scottish literature, this course is designed to enable students to spend more time focussing on the work on individual Scottish writers, some of whom might be well-known (such as Robert Louis Stevenson, Walter Scott, Ali Smith) and others of whom might still be relatively under-represented (such as Susan Ferrier, Catherine Carswell, Hamish Henderson). It asks how we are to understand such authors in the context of contemporary literary studies and how we are to analyse and interpret their cultural significance and legacy.

1 x 2 hour seminar per week over 10 weeks as scheduled in MyCampus.

Are reassessment opportunities available for all summative assessments? Not applicable for Honours courses
Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non-Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below.
Course Aims
This course aims to:
■ Study the work and critical reception of specific Scottish writers;
■ Provide students with a deep knowledge of the texts associated with the Scottish writers covered in class;
■ Develop skills in bibliography and publication history of the work of individual authors during specific periods;
■ Enhance students' graduate attributes in such areas as independent and critical thinking and as experienced collaborators.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
■ Discuss the significance of the Scottish writers covered in the course in terms of their creative work, cultural standing and reputation;
■ Situate the chosen Scottish writers in the context of their own historical and cultural period;
■ Critically examine and discuss the creative output of the chosen Scottish writers;
■ Work together as a group to manage and deliver a research output relating to one of the chosen Scottish writers.
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
