Short Description
This course is designed to give the students an advanced knowledge and understanding of the various underlying principles of fluid mechanics, and provide students with an ability to analyse the effects of fluid forces and pressure (derived by flow conservation laws) in practical engineering systems.

Course Aims
The aims of this course are to
■ give the students sufficient knowledge and understanding of the mechanisms of fluid to solve typical engineering problems
■ show the importance of flow conservation laws with their applications in analysing various engineering systems.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
■ explain the possible mechanisms of fluid kinematics;
■ derive the mass and momentum conservation laws and apply these to study fluid flow systems;
■ describe the importance of flow transition and the difference between laminar and turbulent flows;
■ calculate the major and minor losses in fluid systems;
■ measure and determine the power of hydraulic systems;
■ explain the difference between single and multi-phase fluid flows;
■ solve the relevant multi-phase flow related problems.
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must attend the degree examination and submit at least 75% by weight of the other components of the course's summative assessment.
Students must attend the timetabled laboratory classes.
