Short Description

Students will gain an understanding of the complex relationships that exist between education and society in the broader sense. The course will detail the relationship between learners, schools, communities and achievement and will give an insight into important issues of social justice and equal opportunities.

Course Aims

To provide an important contextualization for the learner, the teacher and the school; to raise awareness of issues such as race, ethnicity and gender within an equal opportunities framework; to provide understanding of relationships between schools, communities and achievement.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

- Analyse the complex relationships which exist between education and society in the broader sense
- Assess the relationship between learners, schools, communities and achievement
