Short Description
This course will introduce students to the literature on a range of key professional issues, for example, effective teaching, teachers' conduct, ethics and the law. Areas of professional learning will be studied in common with students from other sectors or subject backgrounds appropriate to the shared nature of aspects of the Standard common to all teachers.

Assessment
This course will be assessed through:
The submission of one 2000 word assignment set in relation to selected elements demanded by the Standard for Initial Teacher Education (weighting 33%);
A one hour in-class test covering all other aspects of the course (with the exception of the subject specialist areas of study). (Weighting 33%);
A project set in relation to the subject specialist aspect of the course (Weighting 34%).
International students or visiting students will have the option of undertaking a generalised project.
Course Aims
Education in Practice (Secondary) 1 will introduce students to:
■ The importance of teacher identity, conduct, ethics and professionalism,
■ Key knowledge of effective approaches to teaching and classroom management,
■ Understanding and responding to challenging behaviour,
■ Key aspects of child development and learning theory.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding across a range of foundational professional concerns, including effective teaching, models of teacher development, The Standard for Provisional Registration, teacher's conduct, ethics and the law.
2. Display an emerging understanding of reflective approaches to professional learning.
3. Recognise and begin to reflect on key aspects of basic practice, for example: effective communication, discipline, classroom management, and planning for learning.
4. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of foundational approaches to child development, theories of learning and essential aspects of cognition.
5. Recognise their role in contributing to a whole school focus on promoting literacy across the Scottish curriculum.
6. Prepare for teaching practice by identifying knowledge and applying skills within their subject domains and in relation to the demands of curriculum and pedagogy related to the early years of secondary education.
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment. Students must achieve a minimum grade of D3 for all School Experience Preparation and Generic Education in Practice assessments. Students can be required to resist one or more of the assessment elements.
Participation is a professional requirement for this professional education course. Students who do not attend 80% of their allocated lectures or seminar meetings will not receive credit for this course.
