Main Assessment In: April/May

Are reassessment opportunities available for all summative assessments? No

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below.

Reassessment of coursework is not possible as much of the assessed work will be done in groups, and the remaining coursework is linked to lectures and lab sessions.

Course Aims

To provide an overview of the tools and technologies used in web development;

To promote the disciplined design and development of web applications;

To develop an understanding of the complexity of building distributed applications;

To develop the ability to implement and deploy a web application.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Describe and understand the opportunities and challenges involved in developing web applications and working in a distributed environment;

2. Use a variety of development tools and web technologies;

3. Explain and describe the different high level system architectures common to the web;

4. Explain the role of messaging and protocols within the design of web applications;

5. Understand and interpret the design and specifications of a web application;

6. Construct, build and deploy a web application.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment
