Short Description
Roman law is the foundation for most modern systems of law, and this course is an introduction to its main institutions: property, contract and delict. The course is attended by students enrolled for the LLB, but also substantial numbers of external students who seek to meet the Roman law qualification for admission to the Faculty of Advocates. There are no prerequisites to attending, and students do not need Latin.
Timetable
Lectures: Monday and Tuesday in Semester 2 at 3.00 pm; Tutorials: 4 x one hour, Semester 2.

Assessment
The examination comprises 22 multiple choice questions. Questions are mostly 'problem questions', though some general questions are included. The questions are set at varying degrees of difficulty, to allow results to be mapped onto the Common Assessment Scale. There are at least 9 questions that demand the degree of performance set out in the descriptor for D3 to D1, and there are at most 5 questions that demand the degree of performance set out in the descriptor for A5 to A1.

Course Aims
■ to provide an understanding of the main features of Roman law in the areas of property, contracts and delict
■ to appreciate the significance of Roman law as the basis for civilian legal systems and Scots law
■ to use the study of elementary Roman law as an introduction to legal reasoning

By the end of this course students will be able to:
■ Identify and distinguish real from personal legal relationships
■ Apply legal rules to narrative problems
■ Extrapolate rules from cases
■ Understand the development of the law over centuries
■ Navigate a commonly used collaborative networking platform
