Structural Design Project 3 ENG3075

  • Academic Session: 2024-25
  • School: School of Engineering
  • Credits: 10
  • Level: Level 3 (SCQF level 9)
  • Typically Offered: Semester 2
  • Available to Visiting Students: No
  • Collaborative Online International Learning: No

Short Description

This course consists of two components: A multi-disciplinary "Interact" design project and a stand alone structural design project. The multi-disciplineary project is carried out in groups, with students from other HE institutions, and includes engineers, quantity surveyors and architects. The structural design project is a group project with students from The University of Glasgow only.

Timetable

Various afternoon sessions for a period of 6 weeks

40% Interact Project Output (Journal/Poster)

10% Interact Oral Assessment & Presentation

50% Structural Design Project Report

Are reassessment opportunities available for all summative assessments? No

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below.

This course is a continuously assessed group exercise, with each team involving students from other institutions, and reassessment is therefore not possible.

Course Aims

The 'interact' element of the course aims to provide experience of working in a small team with an architect and quantity surveyor to influence the architectural concept and develop a viable and sustainable structural solution based on the project brief requirements.

The course aim of the structural project is for the students to design a complete structure of modest size, applying the knowledge and skills they have developed in the proceeding semesters, in particular, Structural Design 2 (ENG2048)  and Structural Design 3 (ENG3046).

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of the 'interact' element of the course students will be able to:

■ gather background engineering information based on the project brief requirements.

■ develop a conceptual structural design and refine it in response to architectural and cost drivers.

■ evaluate the success of possible design solutions and propose alternatives considering design efficiency and environmental responsibilities.

■ present the final design orally, supported by appropriate visual aids.

■ work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team.

By the end of the structural design project the students will be able to:

■ design a braced/rigid frame structure including choosing appropriate materials and technologies for the various members and connections.

■ define loads and analyse the superstructure using 3D frame analysis in ROBOT including calculating foundation bearing pressures and overall stability.

■ identify and design critical members and connections, to the relevant Eurocodes.

■ define a safe erection procedure.

■ quantify the embodied carbon of the chosen design solution.

■ present the design in a report, including discussing the main features of the design, appropriateness for the use, structural efficiency and environmental impact.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the course's summative assessment.

Students should attend at least 75% of the timetabled classes of the course.

Note that these are minimum requirements: good students will achieve far higher participation/submission rates.  Any student who misses an assessment or a significant number of classes because of illness or other good cause should report this by completing a MyCampus absence report.
