Screen Studies Conference
29 June – 1 July 2012
University of Glasgow

The 22nd Conference, programmed by Karen Lury, invited papers on any topic in screen studies.
In addition, the focus of the plenaries and a strand within the conference were Other cinemas.

We encouraged submissions that engaged with areas generally considered outside the mainstream of commercial cinema, such as: ‘amateur’ film; educational cinema; industrial film; film produced for and distributed via different web platforms; experimental or avant-garde work; ‘sponsored’ film (municipal cinema, health films).

Confirmed keynote speakers:
Charles Acland, Concordia University
Elizabeth Lebas, Middlesex University

Enter the archiveEnter The Archive
Friday 10th February, CCA, Glasgow

The project team are delighted to be involved in what promises to be a fascinating event organised in relation to the Glasgow Short Film Festival, exploring the future of moving image archives and their relationship with academic research. A particular highlight will be an 'auteur' screening at 5.15 pm - this screening of seven of Frank Marshall's short films will allow us to share one of our favourite 'archive heroes' with a wider audience. Attendance at both the symposium and screening is free but you will need to register. Find more details here.

young boysYouth in the Archive (part of Glasgow Youth Film Festival)
Sunday 12th February 2012, GFT, Glasgow

Young people were putting themselves ‘in the picture’ long before the advent of YouTube, as illustrated by this selection of amateur films from Scottish Screen Archive. Introduced by Professor Karen Lury and followed by a discussion with members of the GYFF Youth Team on the practice of young people's filmmaking – past, present and future.

Download the full GYFF 2012 Brochure.

Free but ticketed. Tickets available on the day from GFT Box Office.

The films screened at the festival will be selected by the GFT's 'youth team'. However, as a taster for that event, Delilah Niel (15) suggests her top five picks. Will the Youth Team agree?

Scotland Celebrates Christmas

Scotland Celebrates Christmas Saturday 10th – Tuesday 13th December 2011, GFT, Glasgow.

This selection of charming amateur films made between the 1930s and 1960s are from the Scottish Screen Archive and feature a number of children who just can’t wait for Christmas! As they knock down Christmas trees and unwrap their presents before Christmas day, it seems that these little tykes should really have been on Santa’s ‘naughty list’!

The screening on Saturday 10 December (15.00) will be introduced by Principal Investigator, Professor Karen Lury.
