This 20 credit course introduces students to the languages and protocols of performance theory and analysis.

2 lectures per week (M, W, 4-5pm) plus one 1.5 hour seminar per week for 10 weeks at times to be arranged. No lectures on: M and W of week 6 (reading week); M and W of week 12 (project week). No seminars in week 6 (reading week).

Successful entry to University of Glasgow according to specified tariffs advertised.

1 x 2,000 word essay (weighted at 40%), 1 x 60 minute exam (consisting of 1 question) (weighted at 40%), individual contribution to tutorials/group project (weighted at 20%).

Overall Level 1 Theatre Studies offers a foundational study of theatre as an aesthetic, cultural and institutional form. It aims to:
1. provide an introduction to the academic study of theatre;
2. provide an introduction to a critical methodology for the analysis of theatrical performances;
3. promote an understanding of the social and cultural contexts in which theatrical performances are produced;
4. encourage a critical knowledge of theatrical activity in the past and present, in a variety of geographically and historically different locations;
5. encourage a critical understanding of theatre arts and their practice, and the institutional and personal frameworks which affect them.
In particular the Reading the Stage course aims to:
1. provide critical methodologies for the analysis of plays and other theatre texts in performance;
2. provide an introduction to performance theories; and,
3. encourage an understanding of the potential role of performance theories in the analysis of the theatrical text.

On the successful completion of the Reading the stage module students will be able to:
1. identify and interpret the performance event with reference to a range of appropriate performance theories;
2. demonstrate an appreciation the meaning and significance of theatre in different societies and be able to engage critically with cultural debates related to theatre;
3. read the critical literature critically, and be able to identify problems clearly for discussion in seminars;
4. use seminars with confidence as a way of clarifying and evaluating ideas, and as a means to exploring theoretical issues through practical application; and,
5. present ideas critically, clearly and coherently in academic essays, developing well-structured arguments, and observing the disciplines of referencing, footnoting and bibliography.

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
