Short Description

The course will examine the origins, course and aftermath of the Nazi Final Solution from the founding of the Nazi state to the collapse of the Third Reich in 1945.

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non-Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below. 

Course Aims

The aims of the course are to:

 

■ Build on the historical skills and transferable skills promoted in earlier course modules or to encourage the development of those skills for those studying History for the first time

 

■ Allow students to explore major themes in modern European history

 

■ Evaluate the changing dynamics of war, racial policy and economics in shaping the direction of Nazi persecution of minority groups

■ Acquaint students with a wide variety of primary sources appropriate to the study of the period

■ Introduce students to some of the most important scholarly debates in the field

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By completion of the course, students should be able to:

■ Identify and discuss the origins and course of the Nazi Holocaust

■ Critically analyse some of the conflicting historical interpretations relating to the Nazi Holocaust.

■ Critically analyse the changing dynamics of war, racial policy and economics in shaping the direction of Nazi persecution of minority groups.

■ Use and critically evaluate a range of source material including primary and secondary sources relevant for interpreting the history of the Holocaust.
