Summary

This course explores how autism effects the cognitive, behavioural and social development of individuals, from infancy to old age, from a psychological perspective.  

On this course, you will investigate barriers to autistic people, including those that have been imposed on them through historical theories that have tried to account for all ‘autistic behaviours’.  You will also learn about the strengths of autistic people through theories that are supported by the autistic community. Different presentations will be studied including gender differences and those with and without associated intellectual disabilities.

Anyone interested in learning more about autism. The course might be of particular interest to families of, or professionals working with, autistic people.  

Qualifications/credits

5 credits (SCQF Level 7) 

Can contribute towards a CertHE in Psychology

Assessment

For students opting in to assessment, the course will be assessed on the creation of a scientific or public-information poster.

Mode of study

This 5-week course will be delivered via 2-hour seminars led by a tutor.
