Summary

From the accession of Queen Victoria to the death of George VI, Scotland was utterly transformed from a country facing harvest failure in the highlands to the industrial powerhouse behind a British Empire spanning the globe. While the cities boomed, Scotland was also fundamentally shaped by the catastrophic losses of two world wars and the birth of the welfare state.  

As this important period of history fades from living memory, join this course to find out more about the fundamental changes that forged the modern Scotland we live in today.  

Over a series of talks, our expert tutor will explain: 

  • the social, economic, political and industrial changes that took place in Scotland from 1837-1952 
  • the main historical debates concerning these changes 
  • the key archives, sources and first-hand accounts available. 

Choose this course if you want to learn: 

  • Scotland’s history during this time including its role in the British empire, urbanisation, industrialisation, two world wars and the welfare state 
  • How these changes shaped modern Scotland, its people and its place in the world 
  • how different historians view this time period 
  • how to access and examine first-hand accounts, archives and source materials of this time at the University Library and beyond. 

Who is this course for?

Anyone new to studying history and interested in: 

  • the history of Scotland, its people, and its role in the world 
  • the impact of urbanisation, industrialisation and two world wars on Scotland’s development 

Qualifications/credits

10 credits at SCQF 7 / Level 1 

Can contribute towards the attainment of Certificate or Diploma in Higher Education specialising in History

Assessment

  • 500 word primary source analysis (25% of final grade) 
  • 1,500 word essay (75% of final grade) 

Mode of study

This 10-week course will be delivered via 2-hour seminars led by a tutor.

Course materials will be provided online via our learning platform Moodle
