Summary

Develop independent communication skills that will allow you to interact in daily situations with a degree of confidence, initiating, maintaining and closing conversations. You will be able to use vocabulary and grammar to give reasons and explanations for your opinions and plans, and describe experiences on common personal and professional matters. You will develop further cultural awareness, increasing your understanding of the areas where the language is spoken. 

 

Choose this course if you want to: 

  • Interact in conversations, express opinions and exchange information on topics of a familiar nature, personal interest or everyday life 
  • Develop language skills to describe experiences and events, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans 
  • Recognise significant points in most texts in personal and professional areas of interest 
  • Have opportunities to converse with other speakers of the language, producing simple, connected language about familiar topics and events.  

Who is this course for?

This course is recommended for learners who are already basic users of the language and want to develop independent skills, having completed an Improver course or reached A2 level (for example, by having obtained a Higher or AS-Level).  

In this course, you will be working towards level B1 of the Common European Framework of Languages.

Qualifications/credits

Course assessment is optional but on successful completion you will obtain 10 credits at Level 1 (SCQF 7). 

Mode of study

Language classes are interactive and collaborative, with plenty of exposure to the language and many opportunities to practise and learn with your peers.  

You will also have access to Moodle, the University’s virtual learning environment, where you will find additional activities for you to practise what you have learnt in class and to extend your knowledge. 

Prospects

At this level, you will be able to interact with speakers of the language on familiar topics. Although this level may not be sufficient to function fully in the workplace, you should be able to read simple reports and write simple e-mails on subjects in your field.  

Or you can progress to the next step, Intermediate B1+, to continue to develop your skills in the language.
