Summary

Art has changed enormously since the late 1890s and Scotland has increasingly played an important part in the development of modern and contemporary art. This course starting in the late Victorian era and finishing in the present day is intended to be a guide to the wide range of movements and artists found during this period and includes artists such as J. D. Fergusson, Joan Eardley, Eduardo Paolozzi and Steven Campbell. 

Areas you'll explore include: 

  • Scottish art from the late 1890s to the present day highlighting key artists and artworks. 
  • The stylistic and cultural components of Scottish art and its place within the context of broader British and international artistic developments. 

 By the end of the course, you’ll be able to: 

  • Articulate, verbally and in writing, knowledge of Scottish art from late 1890s to the present day.  
  • Discuss how Scottish art relates to other contemporary artistic developments, British and international. 
  • Critically analyse Scottish 20th century works of art in terms of their imagery, function, methods of production, stylistic and cultural components.

Who is this course for?

Anyone who has an interest in art history, and in particular Scottish art history.

Qualifications/credits

10 Credits at SCQF level 8 (level 2 at undergraduate study)  

Can contribute towards a CertHE in art history. 

Mode of study

This course is a mixture of seminars and gallery visits, delivered once a week over 10 weeks in 2-hour sessions.
