Summary

This course introduces the absolute beginner to ‘seeing’ and drawing accurately. The student will learn how to use a variety of drawing techniques and drawing media and how to use line, tone, texture, and colour in a drawing, presented in a series of simple lessons and demonstrations. The course will consider themes such as portraiture and still life in a variety of styles. 

Please note materials are not provided, but a suggested materials list will be given ahead of the class.   

Areas you'll explore include: 

  • Drawing skills and techniques and learning how to 'see' like an artist. 
  • Media and equipment: paper types and surfaces, implements such as pens, pencils, or chalks 
  • How to draw a variety of subject matters accurately, in proportion and in a variety of styles. 

By the end of the course, you’ll be able to: 

  • Critically analyse the importance of visual perception in producing artwork and use it in making art. 
  • Practically demonstrate how to draw accurately using drawing techniques of line and tone, texture and colours.  
  • Practically demonstrate a facility in a variety of drawing techniques, media, and style.

Who is this course for?

Anyone who has an interest in learning to draw and learn to see how an artist sees.

Qualifications/credits

This is a non-credit class, so would not contribute to any qualifications. 

Mode of study

This course is a mixture of practical demonstrations, set exercises and guided study, delivered once a week over 10 weeks in 3-hour sessions.

Prospects

Although the course is no-credit bearing, it is still an ideal introduction to the subject.
