Summary

This course provides an introduction to some of the world’s major art collections. Each week will be devoted to one city and its art collections and these will include London’s Courtauld Gallery and Wallace Collection, the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the Prado in Madrid, Vienna’s Kunsthistorishes Museum and the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. 

Areas you'll explore include:  

  • The history of the selected art collections.  
  • Key individual major works in each collection. 
  • How the and the museums are set within the broader historical, cultural and social developments of their time. 

By the end of this course students will be able to: 

  • Demonstrate familiarity with the art within each collection 
  • Contextualise the history of the formation of each collection. 
  • Interpret and discuss with confidence the selected artists and artworks

Who is this course for?

Anyone who has an interest in art history and the great art collections of the world. 

Qualifications/credits

This is a non-credit class, so would not contribute to any qualifications.  

Mode of study

This course is a mixture of seminars and lectures, delivered once a week over 5 weeks in 2-hour sessions.

Prospects

Although the course is no credit bearing, and so would not contribute towards a CertHE in the history of art, it is still an ideal introduction to the subject.
