Summary

“He who has a why to live can bear almost any how” famously writes Nietzsche, but how do we find our “why”? In a chaotic and unpredictable world, is it just chance that we exist? What does it mean to be a human being? Are we really free? Can we live a true and authentic life? How do we find purpose and meaning? 

Join this introductory course to explore the central questions that define existentialism and the work of key figures, Nietzche and Sartre. Find an ideal starting point for anyone new to philosophy and curious to learn more. 

Over a series of talks and key texts, our expert tutor will explain: 

  • Introduce students to key figures Nietzche and Sartre  
  • the main ideas and arguments that define existentialism 

including: 

  • the nature of personal identity and self-knowledge 
  • the value of character and integrity 
  • the meaning of authenticity  
  • the historical context they ideas emerged from and how they can be applied today 

You will also have the chance to discuss and reflect on what you learn with other students and the tutor in seminars

  • The basic philosophical problems and arguments concerning the self in the work of key figures in the Western Philosophical tradition from Classical to modern times 
  • How to share your thinking in discussion and learn from others

Anyone curious about finding deeper meaning in life and working out new ways to think, including those with an interest in Nietzsche, Sartre and existentialism.

Qualifications/credits

(optional) 10 credits at SCQF 7 / Level 1 

Can contribute towards the attainment of Certificate or Diploma in Higher Education 

Assessment

If you opt to take the course for credit (it is voluntary), this course is assessed by: 

  • One 1,500 word essay (75% of final grade) 
  • One 5-min / 500 word presentation or written commentary (25% of final grade) 

Mode of study

This 10-week course will be delivered online via 2-hour seminars led by a tutor over Zoom.
