Summary

Expand your basic communication skills in British Sign Language. Learn how to use a wider variety of signs to exchange information on a range of everyday situations. You will develop the accuracy of your fingerspelling and become confident in the use of other elements of British Sign Language, such as hand shapes, location and orientation, placement, signing space and using facial expressions. 

Choose this course if you want to: 

  • Recognise and use familiar signs to ask and answer questions in familiar topics. 
  • Develop your productive and receptive skills. 
  • Identify and use fingerspelling, signing space, placement and facial expressions. 
  • Have opportunities to practise your skills with other users of the language 

Who is this course for?

This course is recommended for learners who have completed British Sign Language Unit 2 or equivalent (i.e. Signature BSL102), or studied a minimum of 40 hours in the language.  

Qualifications/credits

Course assessment is optional but on successful completion you will obtain 5 credits at Level 1 (SCQF 7). 

Mode of study

Language classes are interactive and collaborative, with plenty of exposure to the language and many opportunities to practise and learn with your peers.  

Prospects

At this level you’ll be able to take part in basic exchanges in some simple everyday situations. 

Progress to the next step, British Sign Language Unit 4 Conversation Class, to develop your fluency and signing skills.
