Summary

This course will explore the architecture of Ancient Egyptian tombs and temples, and the ideas and practices associated with them. Students will be expected to learn about different types of Egyptian temple, as well as specific temples such as the pyramid complexes of Giza and the temples of Thebes. Particular emphasis will be put on how to use archaeological sites as a source for the study of Ancient Egypt, and on how to interpret archaeological sites in their social and historical context.  

By the end of the course students will be able to: 

  • Demonstrate appropriate familiarity with the fundamental features of temples in Ancient Egypt, and of key archaeological sites.  
  • Appreciate the key skills required in order to interpret the specific detail found in primary sources (= individual archaeological sites) in the light of more general discussions to be found in the secondary sources (= modern writings and classes).  
  • Demonstrate basic skills such as critical reading and essay writing.

Qualifications/credits

10 credits at SCQF 7 / Level 1.  

These credits can contribute towards the attainment of one of the following 

  • Certificate or Diploma in Higher Education 
  • Certificate in Higher Education in Egyptology (material culture)  
  • Diploma in Higher Education in Egyptology 

Assessment

  • 1 x Essay 1: 30% 
  • 1 x Essay 2: 30% 
  • 1 x Class test: 40% (60 minutes) 

Mode of study

This 10-week course will be delivered via 2-hour seminars led by a tutor.

Course materials will be provided via our online learning platform Moodle.
