Summary

We will look at the art of Ancient Egyptian tombs and temples, and the ideas and beliefs associated with them. Students are expected to learn about the basic techniques and principles of the ancient artists, as well as specific masterpieces of Egyptian art. Particular emphasis is placed on how to use artworks as a primary source for the study of the history and culture of Ancient Egypt.  

This Courses Aims to: 

  • Introduce the principles and mechanics of ancient Egyptian art  
  • Use key works of Egyptian art studied in context to explore the ideology and belief system underlying them  
  • Demonstrate how artworks can be used as a primary source for the study of Egyptology. 

By the end of the course, students should be able to: 

  • Define and describe the key characteristics of Egyptian art  
  • Produce a scaled drawing using the principles of the Ancient Egyptian Canon of Proportion 
  • Critically assess the specific detail found in primary sources (= individual artworks and archaeological sites) in the light of more general discussions to be found in the secondary sources (= modern writings and classes).

Qualifications/credits

10 credits at SCQF 7 / Level 1.  

These credits can contribute towards the attainment of one of the following 

  • Certificate or Diploma in Higher Education 
  • Certificate in Higher Education in Egyptology (Language) 
  • Certificate in Higher Education in Egyptology (material culture)  
  • Diploma in Higher Education in Egyptology 

Assessment

  • 1 x Annotated drawing: 25% 
  • 1 x Essay (c. 1200 words): 50% 
  • 1 x Slide test in class: 25% 

Mode of study

This 10-week course will be delivered via 2-hour seminars led by a tutor.

Course materials will be provided via our online learning platform Moodle.
