What is Clearing?
Clearing is simply another way to apply to a UK university. Thousands of students secure their university place through Clearing every year and the process of applying is actually pretty simple!
How do I apply?
You can either apply directly to us through our online application form. This form will be available once Clearing opens on 5 July. Before applying you should:
- already have your results and
- have had a look at our vacancies to see which degrees you can apply for
Once we have received your application we will let you know as soon as possible by email if we can make you an offer. If you would like to accept our offer simply add us as your clearing choice by the deadline specified.
Who is Clearing for?
Clearing could just be the perfect way to find your ideal degree at a great university. You can apply through UCAS Clearing if:
- You’ve just decided you want to study at university but are applying after 30 June
- You haven’t received or accepted any university offers this year
- Your predicted grades didn’t go as expected and your university of choice hasn’t accepted you
- You’ve changed your mind on what or where you would like to study and have decide to self release on UCAS
When can I apply through Clearing?
Clearing starts on 5 July. Students who haven’t met the entry requirements for their chosen course, or haven’t received an offer, are automatically entered into Clearing on UCAS. Late applicants can also use Clearing to apply.
You can apply for a course as soon as you receive your exam results. For most this will be Scottish Higher (6 August) and A-Level results (15 August) results day. Some qualifications such as the IB are earlier.
I'm placed at another university but want to go to Glasgow! :(
Don't worry! It's never been easier to change the university you have been placed with come results day. You can simply use the self-release tool which is available from July on UCAS Track. You will then be able to add your Clearing choice to UCAS track.
Some useful tips...
1) Stay calm
Remember thousands of students secure their place through Clearing every year. Even if your results are not as you hoped for there are still lots of opportunities available to you.
2) Be patient
If you are calling universities on results day then clearing phone lines are likely to be very busy. Keep trying and UCAS Track will not open until 3pm for you to add your choice so you have time. Many universities will have alternative ways of making an application such as online application forms and live chats.
3) Have everything you need
Before you start contacting universities make sure you have all your details. This includes your exam results, your UCAS ID (if you have one) and any questions you may want to ask.
4) Be sure
You can only select one course to add as your Clearing Choice so take your time and be sure before committing.
5) Don't be afraid to ask
If you have any questions at all about the process or the university you are applying to then don't be afraid to ask. It's a big decision and Clearing teams will be more than happy to try to answer any questions you may have.
