Research interests

I am Professor in Digital Humanities, based in the Information Studies Subject Area.

My research addresses the creation of digital cultural heritage, and the use and re-use of digital collections for research, teaching, and public engagement. I have a specific interest in the conceptualisation, development, implementation and categorisation of digital methods in the humanities, and the collaborations between the humanities and scientific disciplines that drive this agenda.

I have worked in digital humanities, and on the development of hybrid digital collections based on material culture held by memory institutions, at a number of organisations in the USA and UK.

I have had leading roles - as Primary Investigator, or co-Investigator – on over twenty funded research projects, including Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC)- Irish Research Council (IRC) UK-Ireland Network on Digital Humanities IIIF for Research; The Welsh Experience of the First World War; the EPSRC-AHRC Scottish National Heritage Partnership; and the EU-funded DESIR project (DARIAH Digital Sustainability).

I am co-Lead for the Scottish Graduate School for Arts and Humanities Heritage KE Hub.

My publications include Digitizing Collections: Strategic Issues for the Information Manager (Facet, 2004), and the edited volumes Digital Collections: Use, Value and Impact (Facet, 2011), The Virtual Representation of the Past (Ashgate, 2008) and Cultural Heritage Infrastructures in Digital Humanities (Routledge, 2018). My digital outputs include “Rhyfel Byd 1914-1918 a’r profiad Cymreig / Welsh experience of the First World War 1914-1918” (http://cymru1914.org).

Since 2006, I have been series editor of Routledge Digital Research in the Arts and Humanities, the largest monograph series in digital humanities internationally, with 40 volumes in the series. I am a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Arts and Humanities Computing.
