Research interests

I received my PhD from the Université Paris-Sud with a thesis on the modelling of the helium spectrum in solar prominences carried out at the Institut d'Astrophysique Spatiale in Orsay, France, under the supervision of Pierre Gouttebroze. I then moved to Aberystwyth University (Wales) to continue as a postdoctoral researcher in the Solar System Physics group. I joined the University of Glasgow in 2007 as a Lecturer in the Astronomy & Astrophysics group.

My core activity is in the scholarship of learning and teaching. My current educational research focuses on assessment. I have led staff-student partnership projects to explore various methods of assessment in physics and astronomy. I have a particular interest in inclusivity in assessments, and this has led me to my current role of University Lead for Inclusive Assessment for Quantitative Disciplines. I am also interested in student transitions and student engagement. I have looked at the issues surrounding the experience of taught postgraduate (PGT) students studying for an MSc in the College of Science and Engineering, and that study resulted in a number of recommendations for the sector. I've also collaborated with colleagues from other universities on undergraduate student transitions and sense of belonging, which has been presented in a book chapter.

I co-founded and I co-chair the School's Astronomy & Physics Education Group.

I continue my solar physics research activities with colleagues from the A&A group, PhD students, and international colleagues. Topics often involve radiative transfer modelling and spectroscopic diagnostics to study prominences and flares.

You can learn more about my activities and other interests on the Astronomy & Physics Education web pages, and on the Astronomy & Astrophysics web pages.
