Tuba in front of the University

WHY I CHOSE GLASGOW

When I was applying for my master’s, I wanted to choose a place that wouldn’t feel inherently different—a place where I could find something familiar while also stepping into a new experience. My fascination with the wizarding world and my old soul played a role in shortlisting Scotland. There was something about the idea of studying in a place rich in hundreds of years of history, castles and an old-world charm that felt right. However, beyond the setting, I needed a university that aligned with my academic goals.

The University of Glasgow stood out not just for its breathtaking architecture but for its strong reputation in my field. The first time I saw pictures of the university, I knew I wanted to study there. It looked like something out of a storybook. But beyond aesthetics, its academic ranking and research strengths made it an excellent fit for my goals. The final decision came when I was awarded a scholarship, making the dream not just exciting but also possible.

I strongly believe in fate. While I had many options, choosing Glasgow felt like the right decision—even before I fully knew why. That belief was proven right when everything started falling into place. Seven months after receiving my scholarship, I found myself standing in front of my very own Hogwarts, knowing I had made the right choice.

Since arriving, though, Glasgow has been as charming as I expected. It also has many layers of surprises I didn’t expect. The city blends history with modern life, giving it a character that feels both grand and welcoming. Academically, I’ve been challenged and inspired in ways that continue to shape my perspective. Beyond studies, I’ve been exploring the city in my free time, and each experience is adding up to why this choice felt right.

That said, not every day is meant for you, so even though Glasgow feels like the right choice, starting over in a new world—no matter how magical—can be daunting. But just as I’ve been learning academically, I’ve also learned to be patient with my relationship with the city. Slowly, the days that once felt heavy don’t weigh me down as much anymore.

Looking ahead, I plan to continue in academia, hopefully pursuing a PhD. Choosing Glasgow was the first step in that journey, and as I settle further into this chapter, I’m excited to see where it takes me next.
