I grew up in Henan, surrounded by the echoes of ancient dynasties and the majestic Longmen Grottoes, which instilled in me a deep appreciation for history, community, and hard work. These values, deeply embedded in Henan culture, have become the foundation of my approach to life and learning. Coming to Glasgow felt like stepping into a different world—a vibrant, dynamic city with a unique charm that starkly contrasts with the tranquil landscapes of my hometown. Yet, I was surprised to find a comforting sense of familiarity here.
One of my favourite aspects of Glasgow is its people. Their friendliness and genuine interest in other cultures make it easy to feel at home. I am always touched when someone takes the time to chat about where I’m from or even recommends a local spot I haven’t discovered yet. Glaswegians' warmth reminds me of my community's welcoming spirit. I recall one rainy afternoon when I was lost and struggling on the city's one-way streets; a local shopkeeper not only gave me directions but insisted I borrow an umbrella. It’s these small acts of kindness that make Glasgow feel like home. As the city slogan says, "People make Glasgow."
The University itself has been a revelation. My postgraduate programme emphasises critical thinking and independent research, pushing me to challenge my assumptions and explore new perspectives. Academically, the Glasgow learning experience has been transformative. The University fosters an environment that values creativity, independent thought, and collaboration. I am frequently encouraged to bring my own perspectives to discussions and projects, making learning a truly global experience.
The city’s thriving cultural scene, with countless music venues, theatres, and international food spots, has allowed me to connect with both classmates and locals. Finding the Confucius Institute on campus felt like discovering a home away from home. It has become a space where I connect with fellow Chinese students, share my culture with Scots, and even deepen my understanding of my own traditions.
Exploring Glasgow's hidden treasures has become a favourite pastime. I often wander through the Botanic Gardens, a peaceful oasis where the vivid colours of exotic plants offer a welcome escape from the bustle of city life. It’s a place where I can reconnect with nature, reminding me that even amidst academic pressures, there are moments of tranquillity to be found. From Glasgow Cathedral's grandeur to the West End's charming shops, the city never fails to surprise and inspire me.
My journey here has been one of continuous discovery, where my Henan roots intertwine with Glasgow's vibrant lifestyle. It is a journey that continues to shape me, both academically and personally, and one for which I am truly grateful.
