Biography

Hi, I’m Yubo, a PhD student in Criminology at the University of Glasgow. My research is rooted in feminist criminology, with a particular focus on how victim-blaming attitudes shape societal and legal responses to rape cases in Chinese society. Using an interdisciplinary approach that integrates criminology, sociology, and gender studies, I aim to uncover how cultural norms, gender stereotypes, and systemic inequalities impact victims’ experiences within the justice system.

My work delves into intersectionality, exploring how victim-blaming experienced by victims intersects with other social factors like gender, race, and cultural to reinforce discrimination and inequality. Through my research, I hope to contribute to a more nuanced understanding of rape culture in China and hopefully explore more on Chinese victim-support system.

Before starting my PhD, I completed an MSc in Crime Science at UCL, where my dissertation analysed anti-Asian hate crime during COVID-19 through statistical models. I also earned my BA in Criminology at Lancaster University, with a focus on gender-based violence and hate crime.

Research interests

My research explores feminist criminology, with a particular focus on the role of victim-blaming attitudes in shaping societal and legal responses to rape cases in Chinese society. Using an interdisciplinary approach that draws on criminology, sociology, and gender studies, my work examines how does the judical papers reflect the general stereotypes towards female rape victims (rape myth), and finally causes the victims to suffer from victim-blaming.

I’m especially interested in how these attitudes intersect with broader social inequalities, such as gender and race, to perpetuate systemic discrimination. In specific, I'm dedicated to study the rape myth developed within a Chinese Confucianism context. Through this research, I hope to contribute to a deeper understanding of how rape cases are handled in the Chinese context and identify pathways for more victim-supports towards rape victims in China.
