Biography

I was educated at the University of Sussex (BA Hons Geography in the School of Social Sciences) and the University of Edinburgh (MPhil in Urban Design and Regional Planning). I’m a Chartered Member of the Institute of Housing (CIHCM), a Chartered Town Planner (MRTPI) and an elected Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences (FAcSS).

I have worked at University of Glasgow since the 1980s, variously as Research Assistant, Research Fellow, Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Professor. I was Head of Urban Studies and Deputy Head of the School of Social and Political Sciences from 2010 to 2013.

I have funded and led about 35 research grants and contracts, and acted as co-investigator for 15 other major projects. I have published about 180 articles, reports and book sections, mainly on housing, regeneration, neighbourhoods and young people.

I chair the Management Board of the International Journal of Housing Policy, which is a collaboration between University of Glasgow and five other UK and European Universities.

Outwith the University I am an elected member of the Management Committee of Govanhill Housing Association and Chair of the Govanhill Community Development Trust. I was an independent Board Member of Glasgow Housing Association and then a Member of the South Area Committee between 2006 and 2013.
