GoWell: Glasgow Community Health and Wellbeing Research and Learning Programme
GoWell is a mixed methods study focusing on disadvantaged neighbourhoods experiencing regeneration in Glasgow. There are a number of different research components including four repeat cross-sectional surveys held at two or three year intervals. A longitudinal study of residents also follows-up people who remain at the same address or in the same area for the duration of the study and tracks a selection of those who move away. Self-reported responses from the cross-sectional and longitudinal face-to-face questionnaires are analysed along with various routinely produced ecological data and documentary sources to build a picture of change and progress over time. Qualitative methods include interviews and focus groups with residents, housing managers and other stakeholders exploring issues such as the neighbourhood context, potential pathways from regeneration to health, rehousing processes, and community engagement and empowerment.
Since its launch in 2005 the programme has had 50 academic articles published in journals from a variety of fields including: housing; urban studies; planning; geography; social policy; public policy; epidemiology; psychology; migration studies; and youth studies. In addition to these academic articles, the study has produced 26 briefing papers summarising the implications of the programme’s findings for policy-makers and practitioners, 150 community newsletters and many research reports.
