Inaugural meeting of the Baltic Study Group
Smith organised and chaired the first meeting of the group at Glasgow in June 2005. The Baltic Study Group was established by Glasgow BRU and colleagues from UCL-SSEES (London).
A total of 25 people attended the meeting, including representatives of the FCO and the Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian embassies.

'European Enlargement: What Next for the States of Central Europe?'
This one day international Conference hosted by the School of Slavonic, Central & East European Studies, University of Glasgow took place in November 2004.
The Conference was sponsored by the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Edinburgh, the Scottish Executive, Glasgow City Council, the European Parliament, the Scottish Jean Monnet Centre & the MacFie Bequest of the University of Glasgow and sponsored by the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Edinburgh, the Scottish Executive, Glasgow City Council, the European Parliament, the Scottish Jean Monnet Centre & the MacFie Bequest of the University of Glasgow.
