The Division of Politics and International Studies Innovative Pedagogy hub at University of Glasgow is organising a Best Practice in Social Sciences Teaching workshop for August 7th, 2024. The workshop seeks to showcase seminars or lectures that demonstrate high-quality and imaginative teaching, so that colleagues can share (and discover) what has been proven to work best in the classrooms and develop new ideas for their own teaching going forward.

Do you have a seminar or lecture that you deliver which you are particularly proud of? One that perhaps involves some form of innovative pedagogical technology, method, tool, simulation or game, or one which puts a new and engaging spin on an old approach? If so, we invite you to submit your proposal to us for consideration!

Presenters are asked to deliver a real 45-60 minute seminar or lecture (that they have previously delivered to a class of students) to a classroom composed of ~20 fellow educators from mixed academic backgrounds. Any thematic area or subject from the broader social sciences (i.e. Economic and Social History, Political Science, International Relations, Sociology, Public Policy, Area Studies etc.) is accepted. Subsequently, there will be time for a Q&A session, where attendees can engage with the presenter/teacher. Lessons should not require any prior preparation from attendees.

If this is interesting to you, we invite you to submit a brief (no more than 200 words) abstract to Michael.toomey@glasgow.ac.uk by 12pm on Monday, July 8th 2024. The abstract should include a title for the class, a specification of whether it is a lecture or a seminar, a brief description of what the class will entail, and the Intended Learning Outcomes from the lecture/seminar. The abstract should also specify if there are any specific technological or software needs. Interested parties are encouraged to get in touch if they have any questions or need any clarifications.

For presenters from outside of Glasgow, we will seek to provide travel costs, although we cannot guarantee this at this stage. Lunch and tea/coffee refreshments will be provided.
