Hayes joins as a lecturer in Media, Journalism, and Communication
Dr. Hayes Mabweazara joins the School as a Lecturer in Media, Communications and International Journalism from Falmouth University where he taught Journalism Studies for several years. Prior to coming to the UK, he taught journalism and cognate subject areas in his native country, Zimbabwe at the National University of Science and Technology.
His research concentrates primarily on the intersections between digital media and mainstream journalism practice in Africa and the wider global South. He explores how immediate conditions of practice and broader social circumstances set conditions for distinctive forms of new technology use, as well as how technologies are impacting on traditional journalistic standards, values, and practices.
His publications in this area feature in a number of international peer reviewed journals and edited book volumes. His most recent publication is the edited volume Newsmaking Cultures in Africa (Palgrave, 2018).
Hayes is currently finalising a monograph titled Africa’s Mainstream Press in the Digital Era (Palgrave) as well as co-editing two themed issues of African Journalism Studies (Routledge) and Communication: South African Journal for Communication Theory and Research (Routledge) on ‘Fake News and Cyber Propaganda in Africa’ to be published in 2019.
He has served as Associate Editor of the journal, African Journalism Studies since 2015 and is on the editorial boards of a number of leading journals, including Digital Journalism (Routledge), Journalism Practice (Routledge) and the Journal of Alternative and Community Media (Griffiths University).
Hayes is also a Research Associate in the Department of Journalism, Film & Television at the University of Johannesburg in South Africa.
