New Staff Member: Allan Gillies

ESRC Research Associate in Politics from February 2017
Dr Allan Gillies has recently joined the School of Social and Political Sciences, taking-up the post of ESRC Global Challenges Research Fund Postdoctoral Fellow. His project is titled ‘Illicit Drug Economies, Governance and the Security-Development Nexus in the Global South: a Case Study of State-Narco Networks in Post-Transition Bolivia’. As part of this, Allan will develop publications, and undertake various impact and engagement activities with policy and practitioner audiences.
Allan was awarded his PhD last year in History here at the University of Glasgow, where he held a Lord Kelvin Adam Smith Scholarship. Prior to this, he completed an MPhil in Comparative Government at the University of Oxford, and an MA in Politics (Hons), also here at Glasgow. Allan’s research interests include: the political economy of illicit drugs, Bolivian and Latin American politics, securitisation and development, democratic transitions, governance and violence, oral history methodology, and the history of the US ‘war on drugs’.
