Dr. Yu (Raines) Wang joins the School of Social and Political Sciences in July 2016 as a research associate working on the Newton fund and ESRC-NSFC (China) collaborative project - The re-making of Chinese urban neighbourhoods: socio-spatial transformation and access to public services.
Yu completed his Ph.D at the University of Liverpool, with a research topic on assessing the social sustainability of new Chinese neighbourhoods and its association with patterns of urban form. In the study, he developed a new conceptual framework of social sustainability based upon Western research findings and adapted the framework for analysis in the Chinese context. The PhD project was jointly funded by the University of Liverpool and China Scholarship Council. Yu also holds the degrees of M.Sc. and B. Arch. He had working experiences in planning institutions and the local government department in Shenzhen City in China.
Yu’s research interests include sustainable neighbourhoods, socio-spatial interaction in urban space, comparison of housing and planning systems between European and Chinese cities. He has published academic papers in the areas of planning policy and urban design in both English and Chinese journals. Yu has research skills and experiences in theoretical and empirical studies using both qualitative and quantitative techniques.
