Research Associate in the Centre for Business History in Scotland, from July 2016
Dr Christopher Miller joins the Centre for Business History in Scotland, within Economic and Social History, as a Research Associate in July 2016. He holds degrees from the University of Oxford (Balliol College) and the University of Glasgow, and completed his PhD here in January 2015 on the Political Economy of Naval Armaments Manufacture, jointly between the Centre for Business History and the Scottish Centre for War Studies. Prior to returning to Glasgow Christopher held a pre-doctoral fellowship in International Security Studies at Yale University, and most recently was lecturer in modern history at the University of Tuebingen, Germany.
Christopher's research has thus far mainly been on the topic of State-Industry relations, particularly around areas of crisis for one or both sides, and blends together aspects of business, military and political history. These have so far included armaments manufacture during disarmament and rearmament, and on topics of pollution and environmental disasters between 1870 and 1950. He has previous and forthcoming publications in business and labour history journals, and his first book on rearmament planning will be appearing with Liverpool University Press towards the end of this year.
Christopher will also be devoting some of his time in this post to working with Professor Ray Stokes, director of CBH, on a project examining the future of business history using digital archive resources.
