Applying skills learned directly into my PhD research
I completed the MRes in Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies as part of my 1+3 doctoral training programme funded by the Economic and Social Research Council. This programme stood out to me because it combined rigorous training in the methodological and theoretical foundations of Social Science research with the opportunity to apply these skills directly to my PhD research and broader interests in the Eurasian region – a unique offering at the University of Glasgow.
Entering the programme with advanced proficiency in Russian, I particularly benefited from the specialist language training for Social Scientists, which enhanced my ability to collect and analyse data in Russian. The MRes also offers an unparalleled selection of modules taught by world-leading experts. I took the module 'Russia, China and the International Politics of Eurasia' taught by Dr. Marcin Kaczmarski, which provided an in-depth examination of the evolving dynamics between a rising China and an increasingly aggressive Russia.
Beyond its academic strengths, Central & East European Studies at Glasgow fosters a vibrant and welcoming community, hosting a rich programme of weekly seminars and events. For anyone seeking to pursue a research career focusing on Russia, Eastern Europe, the South Caucasus or Central Asia – whether in academia or beyond – the MRes would provide an exceptional foundation.
