Environmental Science & Sustainability

Priya's Story

Priya took great care in considering her options before selecting the Environmental Science & Sustainability programme at the University of Glasgow and ultimately making the decision to relocate to Dumfries from India.

"I applied for this programme as I was curious to learn more about the science and conservation of environment, after becoming aware of the critical state our planet is in; I wanted to know how to be sustainable and to practice it in various fields."

After receiving offers from several Scottish universities, she chose the University of Glasgow – impressed by the School’s leadership in the field of sustainability. She values the Dumfries Campus as the ideal setting for environmental studies, where being close to nature greatly enhances practical learning opportunities.

"After being accepted into a couple universities throughout Scotland, I chose the University of Glasgow as I believe it’s the leading university in this programme, and I was really interested in the focus it has on sustainability. The natural environment being far more accessible in Dumfries is definitely very helpful for our practical sessions and fieldwork, and we go out into the region and beyond often. "

Throughout her programme, Priya has engaged with a diverse range of subjects that have deepened her understanding of the natural world. She particularly enjoyed modules such as ‘Applied Ecology and Conservation’, ‘Aquatic Environment: Processes, Monitoring and Management’, and ‘Earth System Science’.

The strong emphasis on hands-on experience throughout the programme has been a highlight of her studies as well, and these practical opportunities have been instrumental in equipping her with the skills needed for her future career. She hopes to continue her studies in Dumfries or elsewhere in Scotland for a Masters degree after graduation.

"We were able to get practical experience in almost every course that we did, for example, learning how to sample a core of the peat profile, conduct various environmental surveys, foraging and many other activities that we were able to do in and around Dumfries! The skills I am learning will be so vital for my future career, and I’m so glad I am able to gain so much practical experience here."

Outside the classroom, Priya has embraced additional opportunities to grow both personally and professionally. As a Student Ambassador for the Dumfries Campus, she has assisted with university events, led campus tours, and contributed to social media content - experiences that have helped develop her confidence and leadership abilities.

Looking ahead, she is excited to begin her placement at the Nith Catchment Fishery Trust in Auldgirth, Dumfries. During this experience, Priya will contribute to a restoration programme on the River Nith aimed at enhancing the river’s biodiversity.

"I’m just about to start my placement at the Nith Catchment Fishery Trust. My work there includes assisting in the development of a restoration programme on the River Nith, conducting aquatic invertebrate surveys, planting native riparian trees, and all in all, working to enhance the biodiversity of the River Nith. I’m really looking forward to the experience and can’t wait to learn all I can from this placement."
