Join the discussion with our panel of experts as they delve into the complex issue of overtourism in Scotland, the UK, and Europe, and the shift towards sustainable tourism models. They provide different perspectives on how to balance tourism growth with environmental, economic, and social sustainability, discussing both theoretical questions and practical solutions. Discover the role tourists can play in promoting sustainability, and the challenges this presents for growth.

 

The Panel

Dr Anna de Jong | University of Glasgow

Anna de Jong is a Senior Lecturer in Tourism at the University of Glasgow, and Director of Research within the School of Social & Environmental Sustainability. Anna is an interdisciplinary social scientist, who researches spatial justice in tourism development processes, guided by wider concerns of resident inequalities and accessibilities.

Lesley Judge | Interface

Lesley Judge has been a driving force in the tourism sector for over two decades, empowering organisations to develop digital and data-driven strategies. She managed private and public sector projects via her own consultancy before joining Interface in 2018, to build strategic partnerships between industry and academia, and help organisations to innovate. In 2020 she co-founded the Traveltech for Scotland cluster, part of the Edinburgh Futures Institute, and set up and continues to chair the Digital Working Group of Scotland’s Visitor Management Strategy Steering Group, chaired by VisitScotland. She is a graduate of the Destination Leaders Programme and a Director of Women in Tourism.

Professor Sandro Carnicelli | University of the West of Scotland

Sandro Carnicelli is a Professor of Tourism and Leisure Studies and the Deputy Director of the Centre for Culture, Sport, and Events (CCSE) at the University of the West of Scotland, UK. He is a member of the ABRATUR (International Academy for the Development of Tourism Research in Brazil), and a former Co-Chair of the Royal Society of Edinburgh Young Academy of Scotland (YAS). Sandro is the Editor-in-Chief of the World Leisure Journal and Associate Editor for Event Management journal, he is on the Advisory Board of the Annals of Leisure Research, and on the editorial board of Leisure Studies.
