We will showcase four projects featuring staff from the School of Interdisciplinary Studies as well as other international institutions. This will also be followed by a Q&A and discussion on promoting gender equalities through research.
The confirmed speakers include:
Dr Kasia Borkowska, Dr Nancy Njiraini, Dr Amina Kamando, and Dr Lavinia Hirsu
‘Starting from Home – Reducing Gender Inequalities in Kenya and Tanzania’
Sub-Saharan Africa is the region with the greatest Gender Inequality Index in the world. This talk will introduce the project that in 2020 aimed at tackling discrimination against women at a household level by developing a community-based education programme for couples from low-income families in informal settlements in Kenya and Tanzania.
Dr Lizanne Henderson
‘Women and Witch Persecution: Scotland, India, and the African Continent’.
Women represented around 85% of accused of the crime of witchcraft during the Scottish witch-hunts of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. This talk will illuminate the experience of some of these women and will also investigate the continued persecution of women for this crime in parts of India and the African continent to the present day.
Dr Tara Shirazi
‘Female Take-up of STEM Subjects and STEM Careers.’
Highlighting current research about female take-up of STEM subjects here in the UK and compare with the global situation, this talk will introduce a project Dr Shirazi is currently leading about female uptake of engineering careers in Malaysia.
Dr Anna de Jong
‘Assessing Tourism’s Role in Achieving Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender Equality’
In 2017 the UNWTO positioned tourism as an essential catalyst in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender Equality. This presentation explores this claim by critically assessing the ways ‘gender equality’ is framed by the UNWTO and how tourism is positioned as a medium through which to generate impacts in regard to gender equality.
