Research interests
My research focus is in systems- and cognitive neuroscience. The central goal of my research is to understand what role oscillations and their interactions (synchronization) across brain regions and across frequencies play in the dynamic emergence of cognitive functions and complex behaviors with specific focus on the visual modality. We further aim to understand the functional and behavioral significance of scale-free fluctuations and critical dynamics of neuronal oscillation fluctuations. To this end, we record neuronal activity from humans non-invasively with magneto- and electroencephalography (M/EEG) or intracranial EEG (iEEG). We then use whole-brain network neuroscience based analyses, machine learning , and computational modelling to to resolve cortex-wide oscillations and synchronization dynamics and their role in cognition. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is used to test the causal role of identified neuronal activities and interactions in coordinating behavioral performance. We currently focus our research specifically on i) visual attention and ii) visual working memory.
