Research interests

Research Interests: Currently my main research interests are in two areas:

  • improving how people teach, understand, and make use of statistics, mainly in a Higher Education setting, and working to eradicate negative attitudes to statistics,
  • how personality, identity and emotion are portrayed through our voices and the influence this has on those we interact with (such as how lecturers and students talk about statistics).

These topics are not exhaustive and I am happy to supervise and collaborate across a number of areas.

Bio: I graduated from Glasgow in 2002 (B.Sc. Psychology) and completed my Ph.D. in 2006, in the PACo Lab, Glasgow, on "Understanding Intentions in Animacy Displays Derived from Human Motion". I then worked on two post-docs looking at intent perception by people with ASDs, and by CCTV operators. From there I spent 2 years post-doc in the Voice Neurocognition Lab, Glasgow, looking at perceived personality in voices. I have been a Lecturer since 2012, and mainly lecture in Statistics and Research Methods with a strong interest in promoting reproducible practices.
